Position Title: Telecommunication Lineworker/Technician

Business Nature: Telecommunications infrastructure services, primarily engaged in NBN network installation, maintenance, and repair projects. 

Position Purpose: The Telecommunication Line Technician will be responsible for the installation maintenance, and repair of external telecommunications network cabling and related infrastructure across aerial underground, and fibre networks. The role involves ensuring that all network construction and maintenance activities comply with NBN standards, technical specifications, and safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  Install, maintain, repair, and upgrade external telecommunications infrastructure, including aerial lines, conduits, underground cabling, fibre distribution hubs, telecommunications equipment, and related NBN assets.

Read and interpret work drawings, project specifications, network designs, and technical schematics to determine appropriate installation locations, cable routes, equipment positioning, and connection points.

  Install, configure, test, maintain, and troubleshoot telecommunications equipment and appliances, including data transmission equipment, network termination devices, switchboards, customer premises equipment (CPE), and fibre optic hardware.

  Locate, diagnose, and rectify faults in telecommunications systems and networks using specialised testing instruments such as OTDRs, voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, and transmission measuring equipment.

  Perform cable splicing, jointing, termination, testing, and commissioning of copper and fibre optic telecommunications networks, ensuring compliance with NBN, carrier, andindustry standards.

  Join and terminate cables, attach wires and cables to telecommunications equipment, apply appropriate sheathing protection using thermoplastic or sealing compounds, and ensure proper insulation, environmental protection, and moisture prevention.

  Adjust, replace, repair, and test faulty telecommunications equipment, components, and network devices to restore and optimise system performance.

  Erect, test, inspect, and maintain aerial and underground cabling systems, radio antennae, wireless infrastructure, and equipment supporting fixed-line, broadband, and telecommunications services.

  Conduct fibre optic network installations and backhaul connectivity works for 4G and 5G telecommunications infrastructure, ensuring reliable transmission performance and alignment with civil construction requirements.

  Install and maintain structured cabling systems for voice, data, broadband, and telecommunications network services in commercial, industrial, and residential environments.

Perform network testing, commissioning, service activation, and performance verification to ensure telecommunications systems meet operational and quality
requirements.

Collaborate with project engineers, site supervisors, carriers, network providers, and clients to resolve technical issues, verify installation quality, and ensure project milestones are achieved.

  Supervise, mentor, and train field technicians and subcontractors in safe work practices, fibre splicing, fault-finding, structured cabling, and telecommunications installation methodologies.

  Prepare site reports, test records, commissioning documentation, maintenance logs, and job completion reports for quality assurance, compliance, and asset management purposes.

  Manage on-site resources, including materials, tools, plant equipment, and subcontractor activities, to ensure efficient, safe, and cost-effective project delivery.

  Provide technical support and recommendations relating to telecommunications network performance, fault resolution, equipment upgrades, and service improvements.

  Ensure all telecommunications works are completed in accordance with NBN standards,carrier specifications, Australian standards, and occupational health and safety requirements, including risk assessments and safe work procedures.

Key Skills and Requirements

Proven field experience in telecommunications infrastructure projects, including NBN or similar network deployments.

Proficiency in fibre optic installations, jointing, testing, and network fault rectification.

Strong understanding of telecommunications standards, safe work practices, and environmental management procedures.

Trade qualification or equivalent experience in telecommunications or related field.

The qualification requirement is listed as a  Diploma qualification.

Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in telecommunications infrastructure, including fibre optic installations, splicing, and civil works.
